User Friendly Principles
Sometimes actions or words can have a negative impact on those around us. Even when such acts may cause offense or emotional response, this conduct often does NOT rise to a a violation of CSU policies or local, State, or Federal laws.
So what can we do when this happens?
San Francisco State University is dedicated to cultivating a respectful, inclusive, and professional campus environment.
Other Conduct of Concern (OCC) threatens student success, employee well-being, and the integrity of our academic mission. Addressing OCC is a shared institutional responsibility and essential to fostering equity, inclusion, and accountability.
The University is committed to upholding the principles of free speech, expression, and academic freedom. We also recognize that some kinds of engagement may also have real (often unintended) impacts on members of our community. Creating an open and supportive environment requires the active involvement of students, staff, faculty, and administrators alike.
Through campus resources and support (such as open dialogue, education, support services, and clear reporting pathways), we work collectively to reduce OCC and reinforce a culture of care and respect. Resources are available for anyone experiencing or witnessing unprofessional conduct, microaggressions, intolerance, or disruptive behavior. In all that we do, we strive to embody the SFSU User Friendly Principles.
The CSU defines "other conduct of concern" as behavior or actions (such as abusive conduct, microaggressions, acts of intolerance, or other unprofessionalism) demonstrated by a member of the campus community or department that greatly impacts an individual's overall well-being to the point where it impairs their ability to fully participate in their educational or work environment. When left unaddressed, such conduct can damage campus well-being and undermine a culture of respect and inclusion.
For additional examples please see the "Examples of Other Conduct of Concern".
We understand that reporting can be difficult or unclear, so this Community Expectations page is designed to make the process straightforward, secure, and supportive. Our goal is to ensure every concern is heard, documented, and addressed—contributing to a more respectful campus for all.
